simple safety

Hey guys just got through reading about safety harnesses and one guy mentioned how about falling while going up the roof to anchor.

So one thing we always had during steep roofing jobs was a simple old piece of sofa cushion.
The cushions literally stick to bare plywood on 12/12 roofs.
So if your working an uncomfortable pitch and can't walk to a anchor point Velcro strap 2 shin length sofa cushions on and knee walk it.
The cushions also work great for extension ladders especially when your really extended and flexing causes ladder hop on the gutter etc.
A little duct tape or electrical tape stealing a thinner piece of cushion really increases safety and confidence.

My 2 cents

After this many years I still can't figure why so many feel the need to get up onto a roof that is so steep it has to be attacked with climbing and/or repelling gear, harnesses etc?? So much easier to just spray from the top of the ladder and let gravity do the work. Either way,..I know there will be those who do and those who don't,..been discussed so any times over the years, still just can't see any over riding benefit to accessing the roof with my feet over spraying from the ladder. For me,.wind, material use, and all the other reasons isn't a selling point over the convenience and safety of top of ladder spraying.

*Ladder stabilizers should be used for your safety, and also keep you off the gutters.

No more roof crawling for me. I here ya. I had to many close calls up high. It only takes 1 time. But the cushion works great if your feeling froggy

You can get 90% of the houses around here from a ladder... so if I don't have to walk it I don't. But good tip! I've never heard of that before and one of these days of might save my butt! Thanks

There will always be some roofs and some roof sections you simply can not reach from the ladder. Around here, we have a lot of roofs built on hillsides. Often the back edges of the roofs are too high off the ground to get from a ladder and because the pitch is hidden, you can get it from the deck. In these cases, you are going to be on the roof.

Another reason we used them was for laying shingle on hot days. The cushion would save your skin from burns and save the shingle when soft from being torn and damaged.
Sounds like a very primitive tool but there's endless uses. Great if your stacking extension ladders, pump jack of different widths and it shuts them up while driving. A small buffer PC at the bottom of PVC tubes for levels and lances. Save them fittings from being beat up.
I don't have an air pump but I think feeding the exhaust line into a bucket with a rolled cushion may act like a silencer.
Don't forget Siesta time tools
