Smoking Burner

The other day I had a coil explosion from bad diesel clogging my fuel nozzle. For those of you who have never had that problem at first it's scary $@#*. Any ways since that has happened my burner will not stop smoking when the trigger is open. I unclogged the fuel nozzle, nothing is obstructing it. I drained all the diesel out of the tank replaced it with good and added treatment. The coil itself was put in earlier this year. The fuel filter is brand new. I drained the fuel pump makesure there was no water in it. I have adjusted the air band in just about every position possible. Took the whole thing apart pulled the old insulation out and put new in, in case it was soaked in diesel. I even cleaned the inside of the coil soaking up any lingering diesel and getting all the soot out. Checked where the arc and nozzle are on the inside of the coil, nothing in the way. I can run the machine with no problems, turn the burner on, no problems. But when pull the trigger the burner will ignite and run hot water even shut off when I let go of the trigger, but it will continously smoke out of the vent. It will even quit smoking when I let off of the trigger but starts smoking again as soon as I pull the trigger. I am at my witts end with this thing, 6 hours in it and still have the same problem. I have troubleshot with the guys at Ramteq and still same f n problem. If anybody knows what is going on here, has had the same problem, or any ideas of what could be causing this please let me know. The machine is Vanguard 21hp with a Wayne burner. Like I said though everything works and heats right up, but have constent smoking out of the vent. I'm in Ohio so no crazy altitudes or anything like that. Thank You for any input.

mine was smokin bad a week or two ago.... did you make sure your fuel air mixture was ok. I take mine to a local pressure washer supplier and they said it needs to be adjusted and it stopped smoking..... Just an idea. Oh and my machine is a Karcher I don't know what you have but most have becket burners so it might be as simple as adjusting the fuel thingy

I have had the air band in about every position including the one I've ran it for the last three years in. Thanks for the input though. Ohh by the way, the bad diesel was at a gas station in the hood. It was low sulfur diesel, is what the pump said. I don't know if that had anything to do with the original problem. I guess the brothers (nicely putting it) don't use to much diesel in there 80s box style Chevys with $10000 wheels on them. Future advice: don't fill up with diesel at a station in the hood.

I would pm or call Russ J. or Bob or Paul in case they don't see this soon.

Is the smoke black?

Coil Explosion!? I hate to hear that but can you give a description of what happened?

The only thing you didn't mention was the fuel pressure? Maybe for whatever reason its getting too much fuel now and no matter what air adjustment its too rich? If you haven't try lowering the pressure.

Basically the machine quit running steam with the burner on so I flipped the switch off, waited a few, then turned it back on. About 30-50 seconds later a explosion sound, kind of like a mortor shell firework, then flames were shooting out of the vent until i put them out. Not pretty. I talked to Russ today and he gave me a few ideas, so I will try them out tomorrow. I hope it works because cleaning with cold water sucks, especially since I've got 58 Kinder Care daycare centers to do.

Hey guys. Ive had smoky burners before. gREY SMOKE IS DIESEL NOT BEING BURNED. accidently hit caps. the burner probably threw diesel into the insulation stuff. ANd it is being heated but not burned. It also happens if you got a clogged filter. Filters can easily clog with bad fuel or if you run the fuel dry on the regular.

woops I guess you missed the part where he is still having problems and diesel could have built back up in the new insulation (maybe or maybe not).

I would rather him know than not know because I assumed the wrong thing.

If you dont have something positive to add to his situation why bother posting anyway????

"It will even quit smoking when I let off of the trigger but starts smoking again as soon as I pull the trigger."

Prestige, thats what you meant - no smoke when not spraying, smoke while spraying?

When the burner continues to smoke (grey/white) with trigger off, thats a good sign of diesel in the insulation or somewhere. I have had the 'donut' insulation from behind the nozzle fall forward and partially block the spray. But your problem is smoke while spraying which would mean fuel/air mix, but you tried the air band so I'm back to try the fuel pressure. But then again, I think you could have partially soaked insulation that didn't noticably smoke with the trigger off, but caused smoke while spraying. Problem solved! JK, please post the answer when its fixed and hopefully every possible burner problem will be answered here someday.

Prestige, are you sure the nozzle isnt clogged? Just asking because I have had the nozzles with the 'lava rock' prefilter that you can't see light through. If you have a spare or replacement it might be worth swapping. Good Luck

Russ, I know this is a dumb question but how often should you get your burner tuned up?

What else needs to be done to at hot water skid besides the oil changes in motor and pump, filter changes, etc???

And at what intervals?

Thanks.
