Fire fighters tackle a blaze that started in the kitchen at Soong's Great Wall Restaurant in San Fernando on Wednesday evening.

Staff and patrons at Soong's Great Wall, the premier restaurant in south Trinidad, fled the building yesterday after a fire broke out in the million-dollar kitchen.

Fire fighters were last night uprooting clay roof tiles to get to the blaze, said to have done extensive damage to the business owned by Maurice Soong.

However, firemen said most of the building, located at the base of the San Fernando Hill on Circular Road, suffered only smoke and water damage and that the fire was under control.

Firemen responded to the 5.30 p.m. fire after a spark ignited cooking gas in the kitchen.

Restaurant supervisor Lynn Emrith said all 19 employees and four patrons escaped without injury.

She said the fryer in the kitchen ignited and the first priority of the staff was to ensure that patrons got out safely. The restaurant had hosted a petroleum company function earlier in the day.

Emrith said workers would be out of a job until the restaurant was repaired.

Firemen from the San Fernando By Pass headquarters and King's Wharf stations responded to the blaze.
