Stuck gear box removal

Need to take it off soon and last time it would not budge. My one plan is to run the engine till hot and try it then. Think I'll split the gear box and take the 40 lb pump off. If it comes to it maybe I could cut through it with a grinder?

Get a couple of very large flat screwdrivers or pry bars and wedge them between the gearbox and pump at 3:00 and 9:00. Try wiggling the bars back and forth to make the gear slide loose. If all else fails, you can heat the gear with a torch. Get all plastics (dipstick, sight glass, drain plug with o ring) off the housing. You will probably have to replace the seals in the gearbox and engine.

So would it be better or worse to start when the engines hot? I think it being seized on is the only reason it hasn't wrecked the shaft. I'm getting rid of the gearbox

If its running keep soaking it for a few days and let the oils soak in. Running the engine will not necessarily help other thatn making it easier to burn yourself when trying to get off the gear box.

I have done this a number of time. There is a threaded bolt hole at the top and bottom of the gear box, You need a short one with a small size head and when you tighten this it hits the engine case pushing the gear box back. You can also use a 10lb slide hammer. You have to make sure that the engine is bolted down and will not move. Remove the bolts so that they are loose or leave two in there loose at opposing angles. A couple of slide hits with the large hammer and the pump and gear box should slide back enough for you to get it off. Good luck.

Thanks NJWG, I seem to remember having that plan before - I would rather push it off with bolts, but I think it was so stuck before I gave up when I thought it was going to break something. I'm going to butter her up for a few days and see if she'll go.
