Technicians...to collect or no?

I think I might. The guys seeing the checks, they got a little attitude with me last night. They were sending me texts that I really didnt appreciate. So much so that Im letting one guy go.
All of our techs collect checks and cash. Yah we get some guys mumble about how much we make but its my company. There is not enough time in the day to do all the estimates and go back and collect all the checks.

Its just jealousy, its going to happen no matter what. Perhaps they should be reminded that their job is not to worry about how much you make and focus more on what their duties and responsibilities are. Theres revolving doors with any job.....
 
Most employees don't have a clue of what it cost you to run your business and provide them with a job.

When there are weeks when they make more than you I don't think they would give you money back

What he say in the texts, I'd love to hear that one. One of my guys give me crap on how much I make, I would say fine and then drop his pay and say I think he makes to much

I would set them straight quick and or fire one of them to make a example

I am very open with anyone who works for me about what it takes for us to run our business. How much it makes, how much goes out, and also how much I could save just doing the work myself and not paying them. Its really none of their business how much you make.

Just ask them this "when was the last time a poor man signed your paycheck?"
 
That is why I like my middle aged guys. They understand that there are costs associated with running a business, and that in order for them to keep a job, I need to make money. On top of that, they show up, every day, sick or healthy, and if there is a problem, they know how to take care of it, and are not shy about calling if they don't. I would bet that I don't get two calls a year in the middle of the night.

Even reminding help of all this isnt going to make a whole lot of difference. People are going to think what they want to.
 
Get rid of them, I have one similar Don. He thinks that the government and Corp. America are just out to screw the little man and keep them down. Time will only tell if it was a mistake to let them go but you shouldn't have to hear flak about making money.
 
Shoot, just tell them that is why you get to go to Hawaii on vacation instead of lake of the ozarks.
 
I cought some grief once untill I showed him the gas recipts for the day. It was more than what I paid him for the day. Never heard another word about it. Id fire one of them and tell the other you will pay him the same but he has to start buying his own chems and fuel and you will reimburse him a in 2 weeks.
 
I have a completely different approach to this, I guess after hearing the replies this is why incentives work.
I have a system set up so any employee can make money, if they find or bring any work in or even sell more work on a job I give them opportunities to make more.
It works, let’s face it we don’t need rocket scientist to wash homes or concrete, but we are faulting this employee for taking notice that your making money.
Instead of firing and making him possible a competitor make him have some interest in what you’re trying to accomplish.
Don, I met yah. You’re a nice guy and I want to see you succeed. So figure out how this guy could work with you making himself and you more money instead of firing him.
I actually admire the guys who want more, the guys who want their own business.
Instead all these comments above ask him would you like to be making what I make? If he says yes then formulate a plan to help him make more, explain it will take commitment consistency and hard work. Come up with a commission system that he can succeed on, I see it all the time guys set standards way to high and employees get frustrated. Be fair to him and you, if it works for him you will make more in the long run, like anything this may require and investment or your time to lay it out and work the kinks out.
Be honest with him you’re creating it, because your co growing so much and you’re not certain but you want it to be fair. So you both can prosper.
Keep this in mind, because I suggested this doesn’t mean this guy fits the profile. The most important things in your process are the selection of this person. So to all the others guys that might read this, you may fail many times before you find that magic person.
My employees all have the option to make more and make me more. How many actually do it? Very Few, but I never hear that stuff about the check being too large. Or how much I make, and then again I don’t run around driving a Ferrari. I drive a ford FOCUS!!
Oh, when you tell them what it takes, you first clue as to it will not work with them is!! They will never bring it up ever again. Problem Solved!!!!
