Upstreaming and Downstreaming???

Sorry guys, but I have looked for the last two days on this board trying to find out how to upstream or downstream...i have a chemical injector on my pump, but it does seem to draw any of the chemicals.... So my questions are, where exactly do you put the downstream injector and how exactly do you upstream (Big Boy)....I used my x-jet the other day to apply chemicals but carrying a bucket was no fun at all... I'm new to pressure washing and have learned alot so far by reading this board...I just wished that sometimes you quys could post pictures.... If there is anyone in the houston area that doesn't mind having free help on a couple of occasions so that I can witness more efficient set-ups and willing to join you!!!! thanks for all the information everyone has supplied so far!!!!! If you check out my website, you will see that I'm trying to legitmatize pressure washing just as you guys are!!!!!

Sorry for the long post! www.jocoecoservices.com

Give me a call during the day. I'll do what i can to help answer any questions.

I have both on my Whitco machine, One goes right in the pump and has a metering valve so you can adjust the precent of chemical.. This is nice for like mild soap and stuff..However I wouldn't dare run Caustic through my pump as it could damage all kind of stuff.
Bought a down stream the other day.. $ 14.00 at Bozeman Distributors..I use this for all Low pressure soap applications.. Because you have to use a soap nozzle to make this soap injector work.

This is what we do with ours..
1) Cleaning Vent Hoods .. I use Caustic in a pump up sprayer.. I put a mixture of cascade Dishwasing Crystals in a 5 gal bucket and use my low pressure soap injector / nozzle and apply it to the stainless steel hood after cleaning.. This gets rid of water spots..
2) When cleaning Concrete... I use my surface cleaner and put a bucket on the upstream injector .. Set the metering valve to about 1....I use dawn ultra and by doing this it siphons hot dawm at high pressure through my machine and through my surface cleaner....

You have to be careful when using caustic .. Caustic cleans well because it makes water hot or hotter.. I have seen many people run caustic through pressure washer hose and hve the hose blow out or the o ring blow out and get caustic all over them ..Thats why we always tote the caustic in a pump up sprayer..

One thing you got to remember is to clean both of these real good when you are through.. I run Hot water through my upstream and also my downstream every time I get through using them so they want get stopped up.. Also on your upstream make sure the check valve is working properly and is also clean..

Image 19 is our house wash and Building wash machine.. (Homemade) It has a Comet pump 2750 @ 2.5 gpm We run it through a flow switch and burner .. The burner plugs into our whitco's generator or a house outlet..
We use a low pressuure soap mozzle that has been drilled out with a 1/8" drill bit this applys the soap much better.
Then we hook the wall washer up .. As you can see I am replacing the swivel at the time...

By using the cold water machine with the downstream soap system and the running it through the burner the soap and water heat up real hot .. Also by using our drilled out soap nozzle it provides a lather like soap to the surface.. Then when you go back over it with the wall washer ( Surface Cleaner) boy does it clean good..

Image 17 is the upstream on the whitco .. I moved it from the other side of the machine ..it has 1,2,3,4.. Metering of chemical ..hose and a check valve to make sure water does not come flowing out when the trigger is released.

Image 18 is my new downstream , my old one got stopped up so bad it wasn't funny.. But any way I stick the hose in the bucket when I clean concrete and there you have it ...

It looks like your "wall" surface cleaner needs a little bit of maintenance work done on it.

For that type machine you can put a up stream injector in where the garden hose fits and onto the back of the injector hook up your garden hose. I am pretty sure delco sells one as well as e-spec. So your layout would be garden hose connected to rear of injector and injector attached to pump inlet. leave the injector attached to the pump when you disconnect the hose. Does this make sense?

RLS is right on the Garden Hose Connection.. I would buy a quick connect fitting though.. That way you could remove everything and it woud be easy to clean out...

Here's the upstream injector for use with a gardeh hose fed pressure washer. The hose goes in the left side and the right side goes on the pressure washer. There's an adjustable orifice inside which makes the pump draw and the chems inject. You turn it on and off by pulling a plunger out or pushing it in.

Thanks that really help out alot, now i truly know what upstreamin means....but wouldn't you use more chemicals when you upstream? Now true/false the chemical injector that comes on the p/w: that's considered downstreaming, if so, what is truly the difference, besides when the chem actually enters the pump...aren't we talking about a matter of seconds here....

Please explain downstreaming if I'm wrong!!!!

Ok thanks...i think I'll upstream since I don't have a dual lance....do you think i can keep using the injector that came on the on the p/w?

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone mention that you shouldn't run chlorine or other harsh chems through the pump...Downstreaming works fine if you're using strong enough chems and a good downstreamer.
