upstreaming vs. downstreaming

For cleaning bare wood and various surfaces prior to finishing, I've always added my chemicals after the pump, either just past the outlet or up near the gun. Since the products I use (deckwash, TSP, Jomax, etc.) tend to use dwell time rather than pressure to do their jobs, I've never felt the need to use an upstream setup.

I know that a lot of people do, though. I'm just wondering - besides the possible advantages with regards to range/nozzle velocity, are there other advantages to adding chem's upstream, like a better mix? Or are there chemicals that actually work directly with pressure?
