Why in the world would you do this??

I saw this scraper stuck in a place that it clearly does not belong.

Anyone have any idea why it is there?

My guess is that it somehow disables the cocking mechanism.

Was the fire system being serviced at the time you were there?

Looks like the old pineapple hand grenade in the mayonaise jar trick. The bottle held the handle when the pin was pulled. I say the scraper equals the jar in this case. Oh wait, I'm a flat worker, what the hell do I know.

Nope - no tag on the fire system either.

I would guess that the fire system guy was midway through his job. Cover off the control head, bottle isolated from the system and no tag. Maybe it was a COD job and the owner left with the checkbook...
How were the links? What date?

That is an HDR 25 DC or HDR 50 DC Kidde tank. The system is disabled. I canot tell if the Amerex valve stem or the scraper or both are disableing the system. I use a 1/4 inch bolt to pin the system. The bolts holding the control head must be loose, otherwise the scraper would not fit between the control head and the valve. The scraper looks to be a 5-in-one paint scraper. Do you suppose the scraper is holding the plunger from depressing the tank valve stem? I cannot tell from the photo if the teeth on the wheel are the small teeth or not. I have seen the small teeth get rounded off and not hold the ratchet. The system then discharges. Do you suppose whoever did this had the system discharge, just pressurized the cylinder w/o putting in more powder? Are the portable extinguishers tagged? That might be a clue to the service agency. The paint on the wall might be also be a clue. That is a garish color, reminisant of a culture that may not be the dominant culture of our country. (Is that vague enought to be politically correct?)

There were no portables anywhere to be found. No tag on the system and I seriously doubt anyone is doing anything there.

There had just been a fire next door at a hair salon which may be why she has to have the exhaust cleaned.

This place is a small pub in "the OC" with asian owners......

Here are some shots of the plenum. As for the links Grant.....too much grease on them to tell anything.

I knew DOug would have all the answers....you always do on these things.

Wouldn't touch it.

Dry Chemical ( Don't inspect them at all )

and I wouldn't want my name anywhere around that place..

I would say about $$$$$ for a new system, and a very large hood cleaning price for starters.. I still probably would run..

Noticed old school there.. When we inspect a wet system with that Kiddie Control Head I use the Kiddie Pin to pin the system .. I don't loosen the bolts.. Thats crazy.. HAHA

I usually don't inspect that old of a unit even if it's a wet system with that style head.. Range Guard used to use them around here but now they are using a goofy Knock off badger head that is similar to pyro-chem.

I think what happened in this case someone told the place that needed an inspection or the system would "GO OFF" and the owners figured by puttin something in there to stop it from going off would save them money..

My remedy ( RUN AWAY ) and Let it BURN !!!! :) :) :)

John B, I do not know what you mean by a knock off Badger head that is similar to a Pyro Chem. The old style Pressure Release Control Box (that is the one w/the N2 cartridge that leaks, and is remote from the tank) and the Machanical Control Box (that is the one that sits on the valve and is w/o a cartridge) are not UL300 compliant. The A+ control box, part 91-97200 or B120010 is UL 300 compliant and but may not even be in current production. There was some problem w/the rivit coming loose and setting off the fire suppression system. The newest control box is the Universal Control Head, B120099. I have used that head, and I like it, easy to install, easy to service. But it is expensive. That said, the job I will tommorrow will be to replace the old PRCB w/an A+ head. You do know the A+ is to be used only w/ 360* Range Guard links? I think the old kidde style control head can be used on the current production tanks. I find Kiddie/Range Guard/Badger systems to be the most confusing to update, and always call an authorized distributor so I install the right parts to maintain the UL listing.

Currently, Badger distributors are having problems getting parts. Some parts are being backordered as long as 6 weeks, or even more. One distributor I know of now gets some of his nozzles, nozzles seals, and cartridges from Brooks.
