Will chemicals hurt parking lot striping?

The owner of the fast food place I'm doing tomorrow just called. He wants to make sure any chemicals I use won't hurt his new parking lot striping. His corporate inspection is this week. The problem area is the concrete near the drive thru order menu. If I use a degreaser and it runs into the asphalt parking lot, will it do anything to the new paint lines. I think they were done a few days ago.

Keep them wet, before, during, and rinse after, and I would think (hope) that they would be OK.

If worst comes to worst, you can always go back to Home Depot and buy a can of parking lot paint. They cost around $4.50 a can, yellow or white.

Good Luck, and I hope you get the others too.

Yes, most concrete cleaners will destroy asphalt and hurt the striping.

Will the customer notice that you have taken life off the asphalt or the paint? NO

Will you as a contractor do something to prevent this? I hope… that’s why your asking I assume.

Kris, that’s concrete cleaner that I suggest you to use from home depot will not hurt the asphalt or the paint. However if you use any caustic based cleaners they could and I say could hurt the paint. it will really depend on how you use them and if dilute around those areas.

for the most part I wouldn’t worry to much I think if you follow Mikes advice and check to see your not using a caustic based cleaner and the paints not latex you will be OK. I think your manager has had someone in the past blast his lines off. He may even be using a cleaner that effects his own lines and doesn’t even know. LOL

I hope you figured out how to stop those lines in the concrete from your surface cleaner?

As you probably know, the dirt at a restaurant is mostly made up of grease, gum and gum with grease on it. This usually requires some type of caustic cleaner, the grease anyway. Wet down the parking lot before hand, start with a weak dilution of cleaner and only strengthen if needed. You can also contain the water and keep it off the parking lot, for the most part.

not sure if that cleansr is caustic, the label should tell you. I have used it and it work pretty well.

To answer your question "what is caustic?"

caustic is any chemical that can burn or destroy living tissue.
That means it can be either an acid or an alkaline.

Most degreasers are alkalines (having a ph greater than 7) containing sodium hydroxide as the active ingredient.

Some degreasers are acids (having a ph lower than 7) containing d-limonene or citric acid as the active ingredient.

High alkaline chemicals (ph 11) such as sodium hydroxide attack petroleum products such as asphalt, breaking them down. Acid based cleaners (ph 3-4) are less aggressive toward petroleum products but they will break it down eventually.

Also alot of the degreasers are caustic and like Ron said well hurt the stripping. If useing a strong mix to remove the grease the run off will damage the stripping nomatter how much you try to avoid it,its best not to let any run off get on paint if useing a strong caustic cleaner.
