Zinc Strips

I found a website that shows zinc strips do not work very well.

Maybe it depends on the climate?

Here in NC, I have heard they do work. I have noticed the flashing around chimneys will keep the roof clean underneath it.

Debating whether or not to try this out.

The don't work here in Florida, UNLESS you place em every 4 feet or so, and that looks terrible.

I have heard Copper works better.
IMHO, better to sell a spray type product

Thompson's water seal and copper sulfate. $10/gallon + ? amount of CS.

2000 sq.ft of roof = 20 gallons of TWS + CS = $200 + CS + labor.

Brainstorming here, trying to think what to charge for a long term roof treatment.

All we need is a delivery vehicle that will degrade slowly over time, so the copper sulfate "stays" on the roof.

And, don't get too attached to copper sulfate either ?

We must also look at the effects of UV Radiation, and be sure it does not break the biocide down llike it does to chlorine ?

There are many effective biocides like QUAT, Zinc Sulfate, etc, etc.

We must see what the most stable and cost effective one is >

Heck, one might even use a cheap glue to spray on a roof, with a biocide mixed in ?

All we need is something cheap, so we can offer this service at a reasonable cost ?

I have installed both copper and zinc strips in the past. They both work for about 2-3 feet beneath the installation area. Like Chris says you must install rows of them going across the roof. Costs a fortune too, I would charge 4x the price of a roof cleaning to install copper strips. Roof cleaning is the way to go.

I was going to add my two cents to this but Zack said exactly what I was going to say.

In the NW they will keep the area 1-3ft clean below in some cases, in others I have seen it growing right on the edge of the strip. They also can curl and make sort of a rain channel. Depending on how they're installed it can add a lot of extra holes in the roof.
