Fire breaks out at Lau Pa Sat

SINGAPORE: A fire broke out at Lau Pa Sat - a popular food court in the downtown business district - Tuesday afternoon.

No one was injured in the fire, which occurred at about 3.30pm. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.

The centralised ventilation duct and part of the roof were burned during the fire.

MediaCorp understands the food court operator immediately cut off gas and electricity supply to stalls in the affected area.

However, two food stalls behind Wendy's Restaurant were still affected.

Before firefighters arrived, some members of the public tried to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher and an internal hose reel.

Firefighters managed to control the fire within five minutes of their arrival.

Stallholders said business was not affected much as the fire occurred past lunch hour.

They said they hope to resume business as soon as possible.
