I need some help with what I need to do about this job!

Here it is guys. I have a fleet that I wash bimonthly. They have over 65 units that I wash for a base price for under 13 per unit be it a 53footer or a cab or bob-truck. They have one main location with 70 trucks and 5 small locations with 1 to 5 trucks. To do the big job it takes me 3 hours to complete with my crew and the other 5 jobs pay a third the money but it takes a 8 hour day to drive to them all and wash them. Ive done this job for 14 months with no complaints and Ive never missed the job even during the winter. Here is what has happened and here is the problem. I love this job! it pays my bills! it makes up 25 percent of my business. A guy in the office there got a divorce and everyone feels sorry for him so he rented PW equipment and they have put me on standby to give this guy a shot at my job. Now of course they want me to continue the crappy work for them doing teh 5 small jobs (cause the guy probably wont be able to do these jobs as well as the big one) but they want me to put everything on hold for this other guy.. THIS IS BS TO MEE.. i guaranteed my prices to them for 3 years. I am pretty sure they will call me back. What would you do? Contract? Price hike? same rate and be glad in this economy that i have a job? Sorry for the typos. DMOONEY
 
Dustin if the money you recieve from them is as important as you say, I would do the crappy jobs and more than likely they will come back to you with the easy account after they realize he cant provide the same service you have been, if you dump them its over more than likely and they will move on as well.

This is what I thought as well.. If I stick with the crap jobs then Ill always have a foot in the door at the big one.


I know their not going to hire anyone to do the crappy jobs. Ill probably have those trucks to wash for life. lol
 
This is a hard one. You are going to lose money on those jobs, and it is not very fair of them to expect you to do the little jobs without the big yard, for the same price. They have got to understand that the travel time will kill any profits that you have in the job. I think that I would explain that to them. Of course the guy wants to cherry pick the good job, and leave scraps. That is what I would do, if I could get away with it, too.

On the other hand, with rented equipment, and no experience, he won't last a month.

I think everything will change when the bugs arrive. If its rented... hes using a short wand.
 
It sure would be nice tho for a bit more job security than that!
 
Once he figures out it's real work he'll move on. I'd do the others for maybe 3 times if he doesn't walk I'd find another customer. Give him time to fail.
 
I would look at it like this... If you can make some money on the crappy jobs do it, if you loose money talk to them and tell them why you cant do it. they will under stand they are in the bizz. world. offer them to help the guy out as an employee in your Co. The same thing happened to me on a fleet i washed 3yrs ago. Good money but they said "we want him to do it bi weekly and you doit on a 30". turns out it was family that got moved up in the Co. ranks. so I gavem the "duce" When he starts to do it and rents his PW and has to pay for soap, chems, and misc eqip. he will find somthing else to do for money. they called me back after 2mo. but i requested a contract be signed, they denied and now are bankrupt. go figure? good luck
 
Throw out the reclaim card.( if you reclaim on the job). ruffle up some feathers & show them you are the one for the job.

lol. Ill give it some time. I talked to the boss today and he said he saw one of the trucks the guy washed and it looked like crap. He said it had water standing in the wheel after he got done.. omg.. water in the tractor wheel? mabye i need to find another customer lol.
 
I would tell him that without the other trucks you are not able to make a profit and you cant expect me to work for nothing. I would think that as a buisness man he will understand this and if he dosen't then he is not someone you want to do buisness with anyway?
