It was not always like this, but it is bad, and getting even worse! Ask most Veteran Cleaners, they will tell you our businesses are being ruined lately ....

In my field of Roof Cleaning, Chemicals cost almost 1/2 what they cost now, and we got way more money for cleaning roofs back then.
Even the lowest priced roof cleaning slimeballs would never get on a roof, much less clean one back then, for under 300.00. No one wanted to "face the guys" at the Love Bar with that kind of reputation. People who worked cheap were ridiculed, even shunned by the guys. There was an unofficial "Wall of Shame" we need to bring back IMHO, to publicly identify, ostracize and embarass those who cut everyones throats. You know who you are, and so do we :wave3: You MAY see it at the RCIA Forum, in a closed section of course! Sure don't want to bring any good publicity to those who ruin it for everyone, only bad!

Sorry, I thought this was a Lori thread. Mine got deleted:banghead:

Chris i dont think thats a good idea, nobody looks good by bad mouthing someone else on a public forum. We dont want to provide them any online exposure that could potentially raise their site up the web rankings. There will always be lowballers you or I can do nothing about that. the lowballers I can deal with, its the ones who dont do their own footwork and then beat you by undercutting your price that I dont like. the ones who dont know how or why a job should have a certain price point are the real problems in the exterior cleaning fields.

Bad Idea Chris, the eason is that some companies can work for less money due to volume of work and it would be unfair to treat them that way. I do understand your reasons, I mean if a guy with no insurance rolls up in an 85 mazda pickup with a 30 gallon drum tied in the back of it with a pump on top and a pump up sprayer and a ladder wedged in the bed and charges someone 200 bucks for a 3000 sq ft roof, is that really a problem? He will be gone in no time anyway. But if it is a legit company that can make it on a lesser margin then the problem is yours.

Point is I cant make hamburgers and sell them for what McDonalds does but I do make a darn fine Hamburger I just have to find out where my place is in the mix of things

Greg, I have had a spat of calls this week from people posing as potential customers asking for costs and what materials I use etc etc. I know they are other companies 'cause they wont give me an exact location. I'm sure yourself and Steven have had the same calls.

I bet you can make a good burger Russ! I can "make it" on a lesser margin too. But once the price is lowered, guess what ? That's the NEW price. You don't see Auto Mechanics whoring out their labor. They have a book that tells em what to charge. Most, in my area at least, stick pretty close to the book.

I get pretexting calls weekly. Guys trying to spoof you out of your pricing, methods etc. Mine usually start with "how much would you charge to clean about 25 squares of roofing?" Doesn't sound like a homeowner.

Low prices don't always denote bad or cheap work. When we first started roof cleaning we were "low ballers". Our competitors used some broom like attachment for a PW and took 8 hours and 3 guys for a 2,500 s/f roof and charged $1,500.

Auto mechanics deal with "back alley Bob's" all the time. We've been getting beat up on a prices more this year than ever before. We just keep the same prices and go get another customer. I'm sure it's a different game in FL with all the "competition".

A wall of shame should be made for the dirty buildings/roofs/carpets/sidewalks/ whatever, the customer should be the one on the chopping block. I have always wanted to make a web page called the dirty dozen, where people from all over the country could post PHOTOS and location only of dirty buildings and what not. Cause if I have to go to another restaurant and the GM tells me, no its not dirty, I will surely just have to bang my head into the wall. But putting a little bit of shame on the owner/operator could do wonders.

I just LOVE the ones who shop me, LOL
I had one who was a certain competitor, or would be competitor. He asked competitor only questions, and we rocked his world! I "bid" from 50 to 75 dollars on his "3500 sq ft barrel tile roof with a 4/12 pitch and gutters all around" I told him that if the 50 to 75 dollars was in his budget, we could do it right away. All I heard after that was a dial tone :rotflmao1:

If you want the bulk of lowballers to stop popping up, remove every piece of roof cleaning info from all of the boards. You will still have these guys, but about 95% less new guys.

These boards are breeding lowballers and are pricing us out of the market. The info's too easily attainable. I feel hypocritical because if it werent for this board I WOULD have gone out of business very quickly and my 1 major competitor would still be dominating.

But its just something to ponder...

It is not so much these boards Scott, it is the equipment sellers who turn out competitors on a daily basis. Call any equipment seller, they will set you up with a roof or pressure cleaning set up, and tell you how to use it. You really can't blame them, it's what they do. This business is way too easy to get into, like lawn care is. Result is supply exceeds demand, prices drop. The Wall of Shame is just a rant, it will not do much, if any, good.
