Buy or replace?

My machine is a 16hp vanguard that belt drives a general ts2021.

I bought used and it's an old unit! I just realized that I have water leaking into the crankcase.

I can buy a new one for $479 from several suppliers.
Considering that I don't even have a backup pump and my limited knowledge on replace seals and checkvalves and packings and all that other stuff, would you buy a new pump or venture into the unknown land pump repair?

Call Rex at PWP, contact Lori on here. They can help ya figure out the issue and likely can get you what you need to fix or repair it. They just saved me a bunch of $$$ woith a used head.

At best your oil seals are gone. Buy a new one, re-build old one for backup.

Regardless of what condition your general pump is. it should be thrown away on principle

I just replace them when it gets to that point. It can be repaired, but, I worry about damage to the crank, etc.

You might just change the oil in the pump. Sometimes they can keep going for a good long while with a slight seal leak. As long as it performs like it should that is.

Update:

I spent most Sunday morning pulling the head off my pump for the first time. Pretty interesting and surprisingly simple (not as many parts as I imagined).

Gave Rex at PWP about 10 calls in the process and thanks for his generous help.

the check valves seem to be in good shape except I couldn't pull off the check valve covers for the inlet side of the pump (need to buy a bigger socket set cause my crescent wrench couldn't muster it).

I pulled out the packing on the pump head and it seemed to be in decent shape so I reinserted it for the time being.
The ceramic plungers had no cracks and came off easy enough.
The connecting rods were in pretty good shape with no visible cracks. The oil seals on the connecting rocks were pretty oily but I couldn't tell you if they were damaged or not before I mangled them by trying to pull them off so now I figure that those are in need of replacing now if there weren't already.

Having trouble finding pricing on repair kits online so will call around Monday morning.

i'm sure all the other guys mentioned are good but russ johnson has kept me in business. not only does he sell the pumps and the parts but he has hands on knowledge on how to rebuild and will walk you through the process if necessary. this guy is great. give him a call.
