Converting Ridgid to Auto Discharge

I'm hoping to convert this vacuum to an auto discharge vacuum!

Is the 16 gallon can likely too short to install an 8" tall sump pump?

Talking to another guy, he said would need a check valve and/ or float valve for the sump.

Tell me if you think I'm nuts and should quit now or if this is possible.

By the way, I would do it for a 30 gal or 55 gal drum, but there just isn't even room in truck or trailer for a drum that big.

The problem is the duty cycle for the vacuum motor. You will burn it up after about a half hour of continuous operation. At least, that was my experience. Also, the foot print of a thirty gallon drum is no larger than a 16 gallon ridgid, at least, mine isn't.

If you want to save some money just to try it out get the blue on from lowes with the pumpout.

At 2:13 you can see it pumping out in spurts.

Here is the one I was telling you about... I know a 55 gal drum is bigger than your looking for but there's the link anyhow. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4YE60?Pid=search

Here are some pics of the one we just set up for our shop when detailing cars just outside the bay doors...

The blue piece is a check valve. The white "sock" is a 200 micron felt filter for sediment. You can hang some oil absorbent booms in there as well for the hydrocarbons. This, in our area, is OK for pumping to sanitary.

can you vacuum at the same time it is pumping out the water for continuous use?

Yep, otherwise it would have been worthless to us. If you can only pump out when it's full the pumpout is of no more benefit than a drain.

Tony thanks for the video of that vacuum. Have you had any problem with the motor burning out or anything? Can that pump discharge water 175' on flat ground?

Mike, I like the look of that drum set up more as a more permanent solution, but until I can get a bigger trailer than a 5x8, I just can't fit a 30 gallon drum (nonetheless a 55).

I really need a vacuum small enough to throw in the back of my 4runner and something just good enough to keep the average law enforcer off my back for these small jobs that I hope to get.

I've discharged 50 feet away.

You have to wait till it gets at least half full of water, then hold down the "on" button till it starts pumping. After that you can walk away and it will continue to pump, even when it runs dry.

We go through about 2 a year but we don't use them on every job though, just evaporator coil cleaning.

Did you buy the whole setup for grainger, or just the head?

Just the head. The drum was $5 from a local place that cleans and recycle containers and drums.

I bought the lowes auto discharge vac and returned it the same day. You have to either pump out or vacuum but can't do both at same time. Also, at 5.75 hp, you need approximately 4300 watts to run that monster. My generator is 3500 watts. Just gonna run a sump pump for now.

Ours is pumping and vacuuming at the same time in the video. Here is there demo video. It works just like this when setup properly:
http://www.shopvac.com/swf/pump_vac.asp

Somebody gave the the wrong information. Did you allow it to fill up partially before you held the button down to start the pumpout?

You must have gotten a lemon. We run ours off a 2000 watt Honda portable sometimes and run it off the generator on the pressure washer all the time. It's not really 5.75 true HP. And a 5 hp shopvac only uses 1000 watts http://www.donrowe.com/inverters/usage_chart.html

I don't know why you had so much trouble with it. We use it all the time. The guys in my coil cleaning class have seen it in action.

First thing is to mount a check valve to the drain port .. Drill a hole and get some epoxy and a nut and rubber washers and mount the check valve outside the unit , then go get a cheap dirty water sump pump from Harbour freight or somewhere for about 50.00 .. mount it in the tank and hook the hos outlet to the checkvalve.. cut a small groove in the top of the tank for the sump cord to run out of the vac .. and let it roll...
