Finding a Mentor

I was looking around my area in Greenville SC at local small businesses that are doing really well, and maybe getting to know some of the owners. How did some of you guys find your mentors.

I found 2 Mentors here on pwi you might already know their names

The First one is:

Good Luck, this is a very important step in success. You have been reading or following some Marketing guys request? This is right on Target, find a local person. The need for someone local is key. Someone older wiser and smarter is always a great mix for the key for success.

I would have to say mine was my father, I did have a long list of others that inspired a few key pricipals.

I wish you luck, try a business networking group. Go there with this goal in mind and dont be affraid to ask for what you want. Smart business people will know what your looking for, it will happen if you look. Successful people often like to share. Make sure its someone outside the industry.

Try the local S.C.O.R.E chapter. I met a man through there a few years back and I still keep in touch with him. They have some great people, and as Ron said, you want some one that is not in our industry.

I heard and know SCORE has helped many people

I went to my local score, they set up a meeting for me to meet two people involved in SCORE at the SCORE office. This was about 7 - 8 year ago, brought in a sketch of a business plan and sat down with the two gentlemen. Showed them the growth of my small company and then they asked what kind of education and college background do I have.

I told them I only have a 9th grade education. They actually told me I will never make it in business unless I go to college and get business classes and they actually got very snotty and I thought rude with me. Of course college & business classes would help me or anyone, but once they knew I didnt have college they wanted nothing to do with me. They said enroll and come back to SCORE in a few years.

I walked out a little surprised and dismayed but I also said to myself, screw those snobby a holes and I don't need the likes of them and I havent stopped or gone out of business. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express

Check out local SCORE, I have heard good things about the group I think I just got a couple lazy stuck up ones

I had a similiar experience with score like Jeff did..I remember it was about 35 years ago i asked alot of question ..the man I Was talking with, talked about how hard business was etc. I remember like it was yesterday ..Thinking what a emptyfeeling I felt ..I didnt feel like he answered my questions..as far as my earlier post, I was making a point,If your looking for a business mentor Relateable for pressure washing the people I mentioned (and others not mentioned) You can Read their Success/Failures and walk away motivated to follow their advice or make your own decisions. I've learned a lot from the people mentioned above ..Isnt that what you would look for with the Score meeting ?

SCORE has local chapters in just about every city. The thing to do is to look at several different profiles and set up meeting's with them individually. Some guy's and gal's will have backgrounds is marketing, some in finance, some management, all different.

I have also had experiences like Jeff mentioned, but when I did, I simply would cut the meeting short, go back to the computer, and find someone else, and set up a meeting. SCORE is filled with members with limited education that have been very successful. You just have to keep searching till you find one that you are comfortable with. I always looked at as interviewing a potential employee, business partner, etc.

All the one 's I found had there personal email, cell #'s on there profile so I could contact them directly.

Of course we all mentor each other right here, but in all success stories you will here about a person that had some major influence in there lives.

I have countless people who have helped me including this forum.

Theres nothing like a freind and coach located right in your back yard. Mine happens to be my best freind, he is successful and has always helped me with advice. The market changes and he is always helping me stay on top. Often good mentors will listen instead of preaching, these are the ones I would look for.

Good luck again, trust me when you find them you will know.

Oh fine, I am one of the pack...

I found a mentor outside of the industry that lived in my neighborhood, and I have different people I use for different bits of advice. The biggest part of it is finding someone that you can trust and respect. If they do not have either of those two qualities, you are very likely to not want to follow their counsel.

As for SCORE, at least you could get them to talk to you. They could not get a counselor to talk to me.

If you work any high end properties always talk to the owners about what they do. If they are big shots at major corp or bank, forget about it they just know how to do a very small portion of running a business. If they own a service business or manufacturing business etc. Talk business. I don't think I've ever met a self made business person that didn't enjoy talking business.
