JC's got a good point. By the time you realize you need something the odds are already against you. I spent some time as an MP and armed security and in most cases if you pull out a gun first you will have charges filed against you. If you pull second, you've already lost.

I have carried a 9mm before and still do occasionally but I almost always have some throwing knives or something similiar on me.

Don't take what I said wrong Nick I respect everyones right to carry and I don't work at night like some of you guys.I was just throwing out what I ran across in my day.I was trying to get to some of the maybe younger guys that guns don't make you safe they just make you armed, you still need to keep your head on a swivel these days. The best defense is a good offense.

If I worked all over creation like you guys I would carry too.

Everywhere I can. My wife & I got the CWP (Civilian Weapons Permit) last year to "legally" carry. Here in Tennessee you can carry totally concealed or out in the open as long as it's not a government building, school, place where alcohol is served, or any place that has a no weapons allowed sign posted.

You've really got to have a certain mind set to carry responsibly though. A lot of people shouldn't carry in my opinion. Not everyone has the mindset NOT to pull a gun. Think about this one, you get into an arguement with some s.o.b. over something, you're getting your a$$ handed to you in a fistfight, do you have what it takes NOT to pull it? You better, in that situation here in TN it'll get you in serious crap. There's a thousand more situations like it, your life has to be in immediate danger to validate the use of deadly force. Like my instructor told us: if you pull your weapon, shot to kill, dead men don't talk or try to sue.

No offense taken, the most important thing i tell my guy's is always be aware of whats going on around you. That is the best way you can be prepared for a confrontation.

It happens out there and i think everyone should take advantage of CWP as long as they practice and are able to handle the consequences of their actions.

I cant belive how close the poll is between Never carry and Always carry.

I would take that bet, if i still lived in N.Y. not that N.Y. is such a bad area as a whole. But there are certain areas of the South Bronx and East N.Y. that you dont dare walk thru at night or for that matter the day.

I had a CWP for N.Y. City which was a very hard permit to get and keep unless you could prove you carried alot of cash for your buisness. We delivered to all 5 Borough's of N.Y. and each one had their great sections and their bad.

But no matter what and where i wind up, N.Y. is still the greatest City in the World, Hands Down!!

I have a son that lives in Bushwick and goes into the Marcy Projects at night, on a regular basis. He said he has been more scared with me, and the areas I go into.

I use to deliver in that area also, that is the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. That is not so bad, that is home to Jay Z the rapper and hes a pussy..:D :D

I always carry. I've had my GFL (GA Firearms License) for 14 years. In the past it was only in the vehicle, however with a severe crime spike in the county I reside in, I've changed my stance. I always carry concealed, mostly during the weekends when I'm out with my wife or running errands and anytime I am pressure washing. I'm with Roger on this, there are some very bad areas here, just like anywhere else, and if you aren't going to defend yourself, you could become the victim. I've taken the mindset that I refuse to become a victim of circumstance. I will do whatever it takes to exit the situation, but that's not always an option.

Very good post Jason. I agree, if anyone decides to carry, some basic training is definitely in order. You can't just start carrying w/o it. You need to know what you will do in a certain situation and you must never lose your head. Keeping a cool mind in tense situations is a must. With that said, people need to defend themselves. In my opinion, a knife or a taser isn't a good method of self defense, you have to be too close to use it. I don't want to be at arm's length of my attacker if I can prevent it. It also helps if you're aware of your surroundings. There's a good website that I found recently, that I think you would like, it's http://www.defensivecarry.com . They have a sub forum called 'Defensive Scenarios' that is a very good read.

Thats why they made GLOCKS

Absolutely. I would suggest this mindset. Once you have bought what YOU are comfortable with carrying practice and learn the legal aspects of what you can defend yourself for carry. and practice.
If you even display the gun you can be in trouble it is not an escalation of force like in law enforcement. You need to draw and fire as one action to a life threatening situuation. You need to make the decision that if you pull it you are going to use it to kill your attacker due to a precived threat of great bodily injury to yourself and for no other reason.

Being a retired Deputy Sheriff I always carry! Lets just say throughout my career as a Law Enforcement Offical not everyone I put in jail was happy about it. I still watch over my shoulder, especially with all the nuts in the world these days. Hugh

I received this in an email, but I thought it was appropriate.

If you do not carry a gun, maybe this will help.

My daddy once said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every mans life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take a whoopin'”..

I don't carry a gun to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed. And if it comes down to me killin’ you or you killin’ me……..and I got the gun…..and you don’t………boom!

I don't carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place. And if I pull a gun on you and you are scared…………………..great!

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world. And there is plenty of evil.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry. I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend time being angry at myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three thugs, whether they are armed or not, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves.

Police do not protect you from crime, I repeat, police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a whoopin'.

I'm with Hugh. I'm a full time bail agent and part time power washer. I have hundreds of amnesia victims that I've had to remind about a missed court appearance over many years. None where ever happy about the friendly reminder or the long ride to jail.

Michael T's post sums it up.
