Heat Heat Heat Heat Gum Gum Gum

I have no problem with gum removal @ 190 degrees? I burn alot of gum. I bet it comes off alot quicker at that temp but for me i would go thru alot of hose burst's at that temp.

When we run heat it will be running for 6 to 8 hr's straight, that's also alot more money for fuel, not disagreeing with high heat but for me it's not necessary.

This is what I have found that works....Hot, Hot, Hot, water and I use a 5 degree tip. I try to get under the gum as to almost lift it up and away.....what is left is melted by the hot water. No matter what you do there is still a shadow or greasy looking spot left but this seems to work best for me.

My temp is closer to what Nick is saying in his post also!!!

I used to set the temperature thermostat to 175 and it would do ok then I cranked it up to 210 and it does a lot better.

I do not know the actual temperature because I have not installed my new thermometer into the outlet of the burner yet. When I have the thermometer installed I will be able to see how hot the water is coming out of the burner, that will be nice.

At the Vegas Round Table we tried a lot of different things with the gum (those there saw some cool stuff). Seemed like the hotter was not necessarily better for removing the gum after a point.

I have noticed when you melt the gum you have to be sure and rinse it all away....If you dont when you come back the next day you will be left with stringy black lines of gum where it has reattached itself to the concrete. One of my first gum experiences ended up this way!

I will say this, at the round table in Vegas, that gum was baked into the concrete. Sure, the 300 degrees did work a bit fast and cleaner, however this was gum that has been pushed in with a cold water unit at 3000 psi over time and time again with some chemical over the years.

We noticed that on areas that have only 6 months of gum; areas that have a high of 90 degrees for 1 to 2 months during the year, there is nothing better than 300 degrees at 2,750 psi @ 6 GPM. No etch marks, no stripping.... just clean cement.

The gum was hard like a "concrete sealer coating", thats for sure.

That is like the gum we have here, very hard, and no fast way to remove it. Just a lot of hot water and time.

My hand is starting to hurt thinking about removing gum. got a job next week and it is bad. Its a smokers corner in an office building.everyone goes there to smoke a stoggie on there breaks and spit there gum out on the 25 x 25 patio

For certain jobs here in vegas we use a vapor steam cleaner (gum machine) to remove the hardest of gum. It comes up within seconds.

I still am interested in one of those steam machines for gum, for those jobs where you have about a billion pieces of gum in a shopping center.

Maybe have a contest head to head in an area with the old, hard gum and count out the pieces of gum and see which is really faster.

Should have equal amout of years experience for both guys so it is fair.

This really would be interesting to watch and video it.

Anyone up for a challenge that has one of those steam gum removal machines?????

Which brand of steam gum remover do you have? Any pictures of the machine? Any pictures of the gum being removed?

The night before, Tony, Chris and myself turned the machine up to 315 degrees at 6 GPM with 3000 psi. That was the highest we ever set the machine at.... 315 degrees ! With that heat, that gum still took some time. Yea it was only a few seconds, but here in California.... the gum would of turned to smoke.

Though I have never seen the gum machine in use other than TV, I do believe that we hit very close to their monster machine. We are able to hit 1 GPM more with an extra 1,500 psi but on the other hand, they are 15 degrees hotter with less pressure and GP M's.

I do not believe that 15 degrees with 1,500 psi less pressure, 1 gallon per minute less, will be much better.

Yes I agree, 15 degrees with a metal brush to agitate the gum may make a difference.... but by how much effort and time, I do not know.

Jim, we just wait till mid August here and hit it with cold water at about 3pm.

That brings the sidewalk temperature down from 450 degrees to 350 degrees and the gum comes right up.

Can I hear an AMEN Scott Stone and some of you other guys in Arizona? :D

This summer I'm still going to make a video and soak concrete and show you guys that concrete can completely dry in about a minute.

We have a daimer 3000cvg. It works very well. You can go to daimer.com to check it out. It gets the water to about 320 degrees and it uses minimal water to remove the gum. We have jobs where we are contracted to remove gum more frequently than a full clean. With this machine we are able to clean the gum day or night regardless of hours of operation.

Jorge, do you do all the walmarts here? Do you have just the front or do you clean the automotive concrete too?

We have done work for them in the past but we actually do a few SAMs clubs here in town. When we do them they only want the storefronts cleaned.
