Most of our work comes from the internet/ google ad words. There are some tire kickers and wasted costs and phone calls, but I highly recommend this way.

Trade shows are very expensive for the work generated, referrals are by far the best but they take time. Our company is relatively new so the referals are just starting to come in.

Brochures and knocking on doors can be hard on the ego, but there is not much to do in our Canadian winter so we do it anyway. At least we get a managers business card and we can follow up later and add them on to a mailing list.

My most recent job including most of my most recent jobs have been referrals I've gotten through BNI. I can't believe how much work BNI has given me since I joined a couple months back.
What is BNI Josh ?

google. must say i'm jealous of the guy in TN who did 25 jobs this week. Our wind chill was in single digits last night and we still have snow 3 times on the 10 day forecast.

My most recent job came this morning as I went to a local print shop to place an order for some brochures. The owner is getting ready to put up a new sign and wanted his store front cleaned. I gave him a quote and he wanted to barter so we did. I walked away with my brochures plus some new signs to put on my trailer rig but most of our work comes from door to door sales or word of mouth. It's tough just getting started with a limited budget!

It's a networking organization. Basically, you have a group of 50 or so people, who have businesses of their own, that get together on a regular basis. You build relationships and learn what kind of products or services everyone else offers. Once you build credibility in the group, the referrals start coming in. If I know someone who needs their lawn done, I recommend our lawn guy to then and then call him and let him know to follow up on the referral. If our real estate guy I know someone who wants to clean up their house before they sell or clean up their house before they move in he recommend me and then gives me a call. It's kind of crazy how well it works. I would have never thought to join something like this, but my dad did it before I did, and his $650 a year cost to join the group more than paid for itself when he brought in an extra $20,000 of business to his little auto repair shop.

That's awesome Rance. I'm planning on approaching a local printer soon as well. I like to barter my services for " stuff ".

All recent calls are from past clients. One complete cedar house redo clean only. 3 new deck referrals by a builder. Referred to clean a condo project by another project I did .

Last few calls were from the website.

I went to dinner, had a friend proof read my 1st direct mail piece and got her house, roof and patio, it's my 3rd job booked. Considering the fact that I'm working on the trailer, other marketing pieces, the trailer wrap, the website and some misc. support pieces for the rig, I've got 3, maybe 4 jobs booked. I hope to launch the company officially in a couple weeks which is when some targeted mailings will be in circulation.

Thanks for the poll, it's certainly showing me as a start- up where I need to focus the marketing energies.

My bad. I updated the choices in the original post.
Well, it is a GREAT Thread Red! It will probably have a long "shelf life", because it deals with a subject of great interest to us all.
All we can hope for now is that people actually READ the thread, vs just looking at the poll.

We never want to understate the importance of a good website, for getting work.

That sounds like a great marketing piece.
