Its time to speak up

John and Josh,

Don't give up so easy on those Chinese ones.......sometimes you can get them and for YOUR price.
I get some once and awhile.
A lot of the time these Chinese restaurants wait and wait until they have to get it done for one reason or another. Then they are in a bad position which can work to your advantage.

Firm but polite..."Yes my price is $1200.00, yes it is $1200.00, no I do not have a better price, yes it is $1200.00, Thank you I have to get going but call me when you are ready, Good bye." :D

We had this guy ... I think the company name was rigid clean.. About a year ago .. he would go in a chinese restaurant and sell them new filters with the hood cleaning..
He would'nt even clean the plenum, duct or fans. Just put the new filters in and clean the hood... I went to hunan wok in jackson , to clean it and the manager said rigid clean did a good job , but he could not get in touch with them. He showed me the bill and I freaked out.. 7 new filters $ 500.00 >> 1 Hood Cleaning $ 200.00..
Now ain't that some crap. So after I pryed out the Supposed new filters with a 3 foot crow bar from the hood and showed the chimese dude that he got screwed he ran me out of the restaurant.. Well it could have been the fact as I was removing the filters they were coming out in like two and three peices...

Anyway this rigid clean did 3 or 4 chinese restaurants like this and in Jackson now all the chinese folks say " we clean it ourselves "

Go Figure....

Last I heard of Rigid Clean was that they were washing cars at car lots around town for like $ 2.00 a car..
Serves Them Right...

Chris-

I really don't like to work that hard, 3 hours of spray n wash for $400 sounds a lot better than 8 hours of scrape and cuss for $1200. Besides some genius installer around here likes to put 30' hoods with one monster fan in oriental restaurants around here. I guess its cheaper to run horizontals to one stack, than 2-3 stacks with individual fans. I personally think horizontals should not be allowed in these type of restaurants.

Maybe you can take Bryan Exhaust national on wok style only. :D

Hey Yall I Saw a Hood Cleaning Company in Hattiesburg , MS one night and the trailer said Commercial Hood Cleanings From $ 99.95 .... I almost ran a red light .. It's bad enough to low ball but to advertise it too is just plain stupid.. I think this guy must still live at home with MOMMY.

It was a school, probably many of them. Still looks low to me.
I have some schools coming up, we do them for $250, the hardest thing with most of them is not making them dirtier by cleaning them. LOL we can comfortably do three a day

Tell them to go to the other guy then. I don't even give them an estimate anymore, when Chang Ding's House of Flying Chicken shows up on the CID, the phone doesn't get answered.

Come on Josh, don't hide behind the caller ID. Be a man!
Sounds like need a "Sales Machine" that turns those scary calls from lumps of coal (or maybe grease) into gold nuggets (or dollar bills).

Now whenever I look into a chinese duct I see your face hiding in there.

Hmmm Well there are those on this board who are simply fishing for new accounts or trying to figure out how they can get into your market.

There are those who are helpful and on the up and up.

In the end everyone is after the all mighty dollar, and God have mercy on you if one of the greedy foolish knotheads sets there sites on you and your area of operation. Even if you do good work and have a impecable reputation they find ways to break you down.

"I think the best thing to do is be honest , Consistent , dependable , and humble." This is what works for me as stated in Johns previous post.

I am glad we did not get that job after all.

Hey Ron, the only thing that has changed for me is I am up to about 5000 services a year which is up roughly 1200 services from the day I made that original post.

However the question that I am asking myself now is has it been worth it?

Running a "Mom & Pop" business with 4 or 5 trucks was easy. Doubling our size has been an experience in turning a small business into a functional Insurance compliant, Osha compliant, Labor Commision compliant, IRS compliant, don't screw up or the mailman and his mother will sue you compliant, tyoe business.

Never mind just maintaining the standard of quality work we have always managed. Focusing on the California requirements just to do business in our state has required me to hire more staff.

I would like to say more but I have to figure out why half the cities we work in have sent me tax bills for doing business in their city because apparently having 10 different business licenses has not been enough. Besides I have been acused of rambling on in my past posts and this one, I am sure, is no different!

Gotta go get the checkbook!

Parker, I don't do hoods but I just read this thread for the fun of it, and it is inspirational to see the way it started and what has happened for you three yrs. later. Everyone reading this should, no matter what they felt about the tone of your posts, admire that kind of ambition and determination. I've been down about a sale I lost a week ago, and this thread has re-motivated me. Good job!
