Liquid Caustic

There is a formula for diluting it, I don't have it with me right now but it is not like adding the same amount of water and it gets cut in half, it is a little more complex than that but they should give you a chart or formula.

That is about as hot as it is made so be very, very careful with that stuff!

When diluting that stuff, it will get extremely hot and will possibly splatter out of the bucket or container you are using so wear the proper PPE so you don't get burned. Goggles and Faceshield, Chemical suit, Chemical rubber gloves, Chemical rubber boots, etc... This is serious stuff, not to be taken lightly.

If you give this stuff a try, be careful. I have seen some very bad scars that do not ever even start to look better from caustic burns with just the 25% stuff or less, the 50% will do a lot more damage faster.

Just sounds unnecessary, the weight plus it is dangerous in that form. Why pay for water? Add your own water and only buy the active ingredient. And if you spill some flakes, no biggie. I put my soap on straight so it doesn't have to be nearly as strong because it isn't downstreamed. You can put your hand in my mix and it's like getting bleach on you.

On another note, two weeks ago, while mixing up the powder I wiped my nose on my sleeve and SNORTED some caustic! What a burn! Ifelt it moving down my throat. Felt like I had strepthroat for about 4 days.

Yea I wish I had lots more info on figuring the caustic as well as percentage suitability chart for various tasks...
What's a fiver of 50% got in it far as pounds of pure caustic..Isn't it like 25lb or so? From what I can tell it looks like approx. 2 gal (by volume) of caustic to 3 gal of water.
http://www.powellfab.com/technical_information/tools/sodiumhydro_dilution.asp Slightly confused as I wonder how much yer 5 gal pail weighs. Is it about 50lb plus a few pound for pail weight? I read somewheres on net that a pail of 50% weighs 64lb allowing 3lb for pail...

Anyone know how to dilute it?? I'm curious as to how many gallons it will end up being.

yea you dilute it very slowly into water rather than the other way around..lol:)

But really it all depends on what yer to do with it. Stripping synthetics ya may be up at like 5-10% with additive but just cleaning things may be less then like 1%. Using synergy of other additives and surfactants complicates everything. Wish there was a sure fire way to figure similar to chlorine use but I haven't seen anything truly reliable.

ps- Hey you posted a great resource in another thread!!...I have seen before but I often misplace stuff. So in respect to that that I'll post the link here too: http://www.oxy.com/Our_Businesses/chemicals/Documents/caustic_soda/caustic.pdf page 38 would be where we would want to look.
DILUTING A SOLUTION
Problem: To dilute 3,000 gallons of 50% NaOH to
a 20% solution. How much water is necessary to
accomplish this task?
Solution: The dilution can be simplified by using
the following formula:
D=V[A(B-C)/C]
Where:
A=Specific gravity of strong solution
B=Concentration of strong solution (% NaOH)
C=Concentration of desired solution(% NaOH)
D=Volume of water to be added
V=Volume of strong solution
(The specific gravity of 50% NaOH is 1.5372 taken
from Table 2)
Therefore:
D=3,000((1.5372)(50-20)/20)
D=3,000(2.3058)=6,917 gallons
Result: It will take 6,917 gallons of water to dilute
3,000 gallons of 50% NaOH to a 20% solution.

I pay around $75.00 for a 50 pound bag of caustic beads, that way you just make up what you need and keep the rest dry. You can get some of those screw top lids for buckets (gamma seals) and keep the caustic dry.

I am not sure how much of a % and how much that would come out to making in liquid form, maybe someone here knows???

LOL.. All the info should be up above Chris.
I think if you take the 50lb and 50lb of water you get 50% solution that weighs approx. 100 pound.
(I say approx due to explainations found in the links plus you probably got something less then 100% concentration like maybe 97%).
To know what kind of volume that works out to we got to use the info above. Like water is 8.345lb per gal and then the variable weight of the hydroxide would be factored somewheres around 1.55 or more, I think..lol, for higher starting concentrations to get you to about 13lb per gal. So your 50lb of NaoH takes up about maybe 3.875 volume gal? ..please confirm. The 50lb water would be 5.99 gal so you would get a total of about 10 gal of 50%...
(It would probably melt the house down if ya tried mixing all at once!)
Disclaimer!!: I do apologize to any and all if this is drastically wrong.. LMAOF :)

That is a good guess but like I mentioned I do not know for sure and would like to see something a little more specific so I could make consistent chemicals and know by using and making them what works at what strength.

I found that the weight of water is 8.33 pounds per gallon but forgot at which temperature as it does change depending on the temperature.

Then you have the issue of the MSDS, that is talked about on another thread.

Here is the way I figured it for a 10% solution. 30.75=[1.5372(50-10)/10]
I need 30.75 gallons of water and 5 gallons of the 50% soultion to get a 10% mix. that comes out to a little less than 36 gallons.

So here is my question now. Is $50.00 still to much for 35 gallons of a 10% solution of caustic??

Chris you should really look for other suppliers like you were talking about. We give 32 for a 50lb bag here

Well ya shouldn't be paying for water and it doesn't make sense to compare it to a prepackaged product of 10%. When ya buy such product ya likely also get surfactants and support of the manufacture. You can really only look at this as a raw product value as yer doing all the work.
Going off the work of this little group of posters we can see that raw ingredient value is the NaOH in the starting fiver which if not mistaken is about 26lb or 2 gal worth. So that is $1.92 per pound of dry raw material..Now I don't know about mobile wash's percentage but apparently he getting raw at $.64 per pound?..where that at mang!

I have been using 15lb of caustic flakes. I will be switching to the beads, Are there the same strength

That price of $75.00 per bag is a company out of town. There are only 2 places locally that sell it and one has a limited "allotment" and when they can get more, they will call me but they are $60.00 per bag.

I do not know about them but I would look for other suppliers if you had customers that wanted a product and one of your suppliers cannot get you what you need to sell.

The other company is around $65.00 per bag PLUS a FUEL SURCHARGE of $30.00 per bag, what a SCAM!!!!!!!! They also add the fuel surcharge on a 55er of any chemical or any bag chemical.

That is why I am paying $75.00 per bag when needed.
