I went to get some caustic flakes yesterday and my supplier has stopped carrying them. He now has a 50% caustic solution in drums. Anyone got experience using this liquid form?
Anyone know how to dilute it?? I'm curious as to how many gallons it will end up being.
DILUTING A SOLUTION
Problem: To dilute 3,000 gallons of 50% NaOH to
a 20% solution. How much water is necessary to
accomplish this task?
Solution: The dilution can be simplified by using
the following formula:
D=V[A(B-C)/C]
Where:
A=Specific gravity of strong solution
B=Concentration of strong solution (% NaOH)
C=Concentration of desired solution(% NaOH)
D=Volume of water to be added
V=Volume of strong solution
(The specific gravity of 50% NaOH is 1.5372 taken
from Table 2)
Therefore:
D=3,000((1.5372)(50-20)/20)
D=3,000(2.3058)=6,917 gallons
Result: It will take 6,917 gallons of water to dilute
3,000 gallons of 50% NaOH to a 20% solution.
I pay around $75.00 for a 50 pound bag of caustic beads, that way you just make up what you need and keep the rest dry. You can get some of those screw top lids for buckets (gamma seals) and keep the caustic dry.
I am not sure how much of a % and how much that would come out to making in liquid form, maybe someone here knows???
Here is the way I figured it for a 10% solution. 30.75=[1.5372(50-10)/10]
I need 30.75 gallons of water and 5 gallons of the 50% soultion to get a 10% mix. that comes out to a little less than 36 gallons.
So here is my question now. Is $50.00 still to much for 35 gallons of a 10% solution of caustic??

What exactly is caustic soda beads? Is it just a powder form of Sodium Hydroxide?
