My Hammerhead stopped.

IMG_20131112_152507_007.jpgMy 20 inch hammerhead stopped spinning and is gushing water out the weep hole. Do I need a new swivel or wll a swivel repair kit do it?
it is a newer model with no grease fitting. Russ do you have the repair kits and are there two different ones? I saw one online that said old style repair kit.

If it stopped I'm guessing the bearings are toast. Even though there is no grease fitting - it still needs grease. Silicone grease only.

You can get a kit to convert it to a mosmatic swivel, plate and spray bar and then it will be very dependable and last a long time. I think Russ or Paul can get it for you.

That sounds like a plan! I want to see if I can fix it for a hundred bucks or so, first. The thing is a trooper. I beat the sh!& out of it and I did probably 80-90 driveways.

I think you nailed it. I just tried to spin the arm and it spun for a few turns then got stuck. I can feel grinding, I guess it's time for a new swivel. Any idea what the price is on a mosmatic conversion kit?

Ralph, I'll call you when we open to discuss your options.

I would stay away from the hammerhead swivel, I would buy the mosmatic conversion kit or another brand kit, it would be nice if someone had an adapter plate to use a whisper wash swivel on the hammerhead swivel. Maybe the mosmatic plate would work?

I have 2 of those surface cleaners sitting in my back yard because of the cheap swivels they come with (these had the grease fittings and were greased a lot but still failed) and in my opinion not commercial quality.

I have not done the kit yet since I have the other Steel Eagle, Mosmatic and Whisper Wash surface cleaners to use.

I'll take one off your hands!

Rebuild the one that's on it.

Replace it with another Hammerhead swivel.

Adapt a Mosmatic to it.

I'll probably either get a new swivel(hammerhead) or convert it. Had to settle for this $675 jalopy! I needed it for a big job right away. It cleans a little better than the Hammerhead, but the maneuverablity is a joke. I gotta pretty much cut in 2 inches and do all corners fully. The hammerhead handles great and gets real close in. This thing came with ZERO degree tips! I'll have this as a spare. I sort of have my eye on a Aqua Force 24"!

Hey Ralph! What are you using to push your hammerhead? (gpm/psi)?

Hey CL. I have a 3000 psi 5 GPM right now. I am trying to save up for an 8 gpm machine, but every time I start to build some capitol, something happens (like the phone stopped ringing a few weeks ago!) . I got another surface cleaner at Northern Tool. I went to buy another Hammerhead, but they were out of stock all over the area. Had to get a Northstar. How's your Northstar holding up? I hope this thing lasts a while since it costs $675!

Why do I have to keep logging in every time I go to a different page or try to post something???

For about the same money you could have bought a Whisper Wash Classic which is about the same size as the hammerhead (they make the 18" and 20"), the Classic has a cleaning path of 19" and has a far superior swivel than both the hammerhead and northern tool as this is a commercial surface cleaner, only downside is you would have to wait a day or so if your vendor is out of stock.

They are made there in Clearwater or Tampa, forgot which city but they are a great surface cleaner and last many years and when the swivel is worn out, they have a cartridge that you can change out in less than 10 minutes, they have a video on youtube showing you how to do it yourself with a couple tools:

Ralph, maybe you can take that thing back to the store and complain so you get your money back (good thing you did not use it with zero degree nozzles, that would have caused a lot of permanent damage) and go and buy a Classic for about the same money and later on, get the kit to convert your hammerhead to the mosmatic swivel, plate and spray bar and it will last a long time also.

I cannot believe that Northern wants that much money for that surface cleaner, knowing that commercial units by reputable brands are about the same price.

I agree Ralph, you cannot get into the corners with those huge wheels but even the best surface cleaners will only get you into about an inch or less from the edge but you can tilt the classic on it's edge and let the spray hit the wall (lift up right side some to hit right side wall to get all of the surface) then rinse. With those plastic wheels, they are going to get worn fast when you do a lot of concrete, if they have bearings, they might get a lot of dirt and sand in them fast also.

Feel free to call one of us to ask questions before you make purchases, we can probably help you come up with other ideas or solutions.

Good luck.
