When the customer asks?

Brut force mold eliminating bleach ! Starts to work on contact..... Works better than soft washing !Or I use POOf ! A bleaching exfolient .Now U see it now U don't , here today gone tomorrow ! And my favorite is . BLEACH BOYS' roof music !Help your roof, help help your roof!

I make them tell me. I ask them a bunch of questions about mold, mildew, fungus etc...and ask them what they think would kill it. Pretty much 100% of them say bleach. They just don't know what else goes into the recipe. That's where I draw the line and leave the mystery. Most folks who call don't really even care. That's why they are calling. They want somone else to clean it.

We did however get a call last summer from a guy who started trying to clean his own with a pump up sprayer. After taking a crack at it and falling a few times he figured he would let us finish the other 5500 sq ft. Here is a picture. You can see where he started...He said never again. LOL... It actually took us 2 1/2 coats to eat through the black mold on his roof. That and we got caught in 2 rain storms in the middle of it. You can see where above the front doorway got rinsed by the rain already after the third coat.

What are you guys using for thickeners in your mix?

Ammonyx Mo

the customer is sometimes around while I am mixing , I carrry 2 bleach bottles with water in them , I dump them in while the customer is watching , that accounts for the bleach smell .

Why do you do that?

To throw them off the scent sort of I would guess as I have done the same a lot of times.

By doing this, if your competitor is trying to learn how you do it by spying on you, this will leave him baffled.

I have spent a lot of time and money getting my mix right, before I started reading what others on the bbs use so I am not helping them unless they are sharing something, life is not a 1-way street.

Gotcha. I wonder what scent of Ajax he uses?

Why do I do that , its simple , there is always a neighbor who wants to know what i use . You can smell the bleach , thats a given , when they ask , I point to 1 tank and thats the cleaner , I point to a bottle and tell them thats another cleaner , and since they smell "bleach" I grab a bottle that says bleach and pour it in the tank . the statement I get from that point is " all you use is a gallon of bleach and some cleaners " I basicly tell them the bleach enhances the mix just like it does in the laundry . It justifys the bleach "smell"

So you lie, got it

Well thats not lieing , its cleaners and bleach , I am not teaching the neighborhood how I do my work . Mix it right , it works mix it wrong it doesnt . A buddy of mine is a boiler mechanic , he went into a womans house to fix a boiler , he looks at the boiler , he feels the boiler , stares at it for a bit , pulls out a hammer and hits the boiler , and it works . He hands her a bill for $ 175.00 , she is pissed and wants an itimized bill .

repair boiler , hit with hammer $ 25.00 , knowing where and how hard to hit boiler with hammer $ 150.00
Balance due $ 175.00

the customer isnt just paying for the work , he is paying for the knowledge .

Mr. Irrigation, telling people a couple bottles of bleach goes into your solution is untruthful. How? Because thats not the case.
You just said in post #40 "I tell them its sodium hypochlorite , the one of the main ingredients , with soaps and thickeners"
That answer above is all you need. You don't need to teach the whole neighborhood how you make a mix

It is really just how you look at the big picture.

Showing bottles of bleach going into the tank is showing the bleach for the smell that will obviously happen.

Talking about it, ratios, etc.... does not have to happen, I would stop the conversation at that point if it was me because things I use are proprietary and they don't need to know the formula.

I agree with what he does and there can be creative word-play, not really lying but don't want to tell the formula is what it is about.

You don't have to tell the formula, I would not no matter how much they asked or bugged me. Saying it is proprietary says it all but if they don't understand proprietary or still ask then I tell them that Proprietary means it is a business secret that I don't talk about then get back to work. Simple.

Green Wash. I dont really look at is a thickener though, but I switched to it because it allows me to use less SH, and sticks better with less run off than when I used Amonyx Lo, Also covers the scent up pretty good too. About 90-95%

It's only bleach and a thickner. Ammonox Lo/Mo/ Roof Snot/ whatever version of thickner you want to add. We aren't doing anything a homeowner couldn't do on a Saturday morning. We are just offering the convenience of them not having to do it. Nothing we do is rocket science.
Next you will be starting a School. 15 minute course. $15.00 Hahaha!

Doug,
Where do you purchase Green Wash? Is there a certain supplier you order it from?

I let them know it is a blend of Sodium Hypochlorite and industrial surfactant designed to cling better to their roof which enables me to use a less concentrated mixture. If the ask or say, "isn't SH the same as bleach" I explain that SH is just *one* of the main ingredients in household bleach and this accounts for the familiar bleach odor. However, using a product like Chorox will not do the job.

If the ask if this is safe for plants, I learned from watching Chris Tuckers video that, OF COURSE IT'S NOT! I explain to them that what is growing on their roof is PLANT MATERIAL!!!! If this were safe for plants I'd be stealing their money because I would be applying an ineffective solution to their roof. I further explain that if a competitor states his product is safe for plants, it will by no means solve their roof algae problem and they will in effect be a victim of a scam.

This way it's a completely honest answer, does not divulge any mixing ratio secrets, explains the smell, and lets them know they cannot do this on their own. Completely honest - completely explained. Period.:yeah:
