Go to Harbour Freight Tools and get a few of these halos single (500w) and doubles (1000w) on tripod. They go for 10-15 bucks each (super cheap). Also buy from them some extension cords. Keep in mind that if you hook those up to one outlet (or outlets to one circuit), the circuit brakers are usually 15amps so they will flip if you load with more than 2000w (4 hallos with 500w each). Another thing to consider is the gauge of the cord: 14-16 is light duty, 10-12 is heavier.

I saw some LED lights in a store that Lit up like crazy. The clear blue light is sopposed to cut the fog while cleaning. and they didnt use up too many watts. but i cant remember what store i was in for the life of me. but when i find them ill post some pics.

How did it work for ya?

I got mine at Home Depot. I used to use the regular yellow halogen work lights (1000W), but the tripod was weak and blew over in heavy winds.

I purchased a couple sets of a new green halogen on a tripod from Home Depot a couple weeks ago. Very sturdy, thick poles. Extends to about 8ft high. Has two light housings with 1000W & 500W bulbs in each light, plus separate button to use either bulb or both. I paid about $65 each. Lights up the area pretty good on a very dark night.

Those LED lights did not get good reviews.
I use a head lamp, a PETZL, that has a 3 watt LED, and 4 .5 watt LEDs. The only time I have a problem seeing is when I need to change batteries.

How long do the batteries last? The website says 3 hrs on the more powerful ones.

We use cheap LED headlamps that we have bolted into hardhats. They've lasted two years now and we just use rechargeable batteries in them. The batteries will last all night.

I am looking for another alternative though. I'd like to find a superbright LED that is light weight enough to clip on the brim of a hat.

I have one of those tripod things too but the new headlamp things at HD are huge and have the power of a dad gum spot light. The batteries last a very long time, very rarely have to change them out. I think the headlight thing works better than those tripod things honestly. I cant see the lines unless the spotlights on it.

What model are you using Scott? Sounds like a better idea than the floods we use.

Thanks for the input guys. I have a few halogens but I don't like the heat they create, they are power hungry and kinda fragile. The LEDs sound sound good if I can find a quality light. I also thought about using 12v utility lights (tractor lights?). You can find them almost anywhere.

Headlamps!!! We used to use Tripod Lights but for regular night flatwork there a waste. I say this because we had wind blow them down and break the halogen bulbs, We had problems with the extension cords not being long enough and the biggest problem was the light causing a shadow effect where your body is blocking it and you can't see the gum.

So today we only use Halogen head lamps when needed because you just aim them straight from your head where your eyes would be looking so the light is always out in front of you. Thats all we need no matter how dark it is.

Which one are you using?
