roof mix proportion ratio

After complaining about weak SH I got a pretty good SH burn this week on my forearm for the first time ever. So maybe it's not just a Florida thing. Dimitri talk to Larry he knows Florida and tile roofs. We never see them up here.

Chris is right. We use SH, water and Dawn. None of the other stuff.

johnson is the man for crunching the numbers

The numbers they give you are probably not acurate anyway.
The label is the degraded best guess. So your 10.5 might be 10.5~15%.
I gave up the math part and do the simple way like Chris.

People, you are thinking way too much and making this into something that it is not.

Keep it simple, 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water then if the mix is not strong enough, put more bleach. If it is strong, try adding more water.

Until you know how your roofs clean (comes with lots of roof cleaning and experience) keep it simple and maybe a little more water than bleach and you should be fine. If it does not work too fast, like within 10-20 minutes then you need more bleach.

This stuff can easily escalade into a large argument or fight over nonsense, keep it simple.

As for the soap, 28 to 32 ounces of dawn or other soap into a 50 gallon tank mix.

Keep it simple.

This is pretty much what i was going to say. the only thinkg I would say differently is that since you are new, and dont know how hot your SH will be to start off a little weak on your first couple of jobs then increase the chem strength as you feel necessary.

As for all of the ratios, stick to 60/40 or 50/50 regardless if 12.5% or 10.5% as they pretty much work the same as long as it is fresh. Drop the borax and go with a dawn soap. (not the blue though)

There is no way to test the bleach out in the field. I have been checking with chemists and suppliers for 3 years now and wish there were test strips like the PH testing strips but nothing out there.

You can take a sample to a lab but you are looking at spending your time, effort and money to do this.

Some of us do the finger test to see if it is good or not, no %'s available, only if it is still good bleach. Put some on your finger and if it feels warm and foams then it is still good, if it does not feel warm then it is no longer good for roof cleaning and probably not good for house washing either.

I really wish there was a way to test the bleach out in the field that was inexpensive so we can adjust our mixes but so far there is nothing that is inexpensive or out in the field cost effective. Maybe someday.

Scott, are you going to the Fort Worth Round Table November 14?

It is going to be great.

That is great David.

It looks like Larry will not be making it to the Round Table, that is to bad because it is a lot of fun to have him there.

Guys sorry if this is a dumb question, but being pretty bad with chemistry, I want to make sure I am getting it right.

Sodium hypochlorite, Bleach and Chlorine are apparently not the same stuff.
I bought today 30 gal of so called (in the pool store): "chlorine". I hope I got the right stuff for my first roof tomorrow:confused:..

Thanks!

Who told you that? Yes you did get the right stuff.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the active ingredient in bleach. It is made up of sodium, oxygen, and chlorine molecules.

Chlorine is a deadly gas.

In our industry the terms are used interchangeably, though.

You know it's strong when you downstream it on a pool cage and that 1 drop comes down and under your sunglasses and directly into your eyeball.

I call that the f&%kin ahe right its good stuff!!!!:yes4:

http://www.powellfab.com/technical_information/preview/general_info_about_sodium_hypo.asp

Reacting chlorine and sodium hydroxide will produce Sodium Hypochlorite
Cl2 +2NaOH = NaOCL + NaCl + H2O
(Chlorine + Sodium Hydroxide = Sodium Hypochlorite + Sodium Chloride + Water)

I know exactly how you feeel. No pool cages here but plenty of ceilings and eaves. Just about every job as that one drop that makes it right around the sunglasses and right into the eye. Sure burns! Hate when that happens!

Same here but I don't wear glasses when I'm spraying. I tried it before and spent more time cleaning my glasses off than I did shooting my love. WOW! That sounded Soooo wrong!

That does sound a little strange, needing to clean your glasses off when shooting your love. hahahahahahaha
